THE OLIVE SEASON begins with their realisation of another dream, a tropical island wedding. Returning to France, they find ever-reliable Arab gardener Quashia is leaving to marry off his youngest son. It is a bad blow. To gain the coveted AOC rating, Carol needs to plant a further 250 olive trees. Now, pregnant and often unassisted, she will have to do the bulk of the farm work. She struggles to find a water diviner to check for sources on the property. Then there is the matter of locating an elusive beekeeper who she hopes will place hives on the land in exchange for honey. Now, as the harvest season approaches, dramatic tensions cast dark shadows over the olive farm. With the magnificent humanity and texture of an Impressionist painting, The Olive Season entices readers into Carol and Michel's vibrant Mediterranean world.Read Less

If you like good travel writing you'll love this series. If you like great writing in general, you have found utopia. The three books in this series were so engaging, I enjoyed that rare feeling in that I couldn't stop reading, yet all the while lamenting that eventually they would end. While reading her books, I could feel Carol Drinkwater's passions as if they were my own. Very rare.
If you have ever had even the remotest fantasy of buying a home in France or any other foreign country you must read this book - right after you've read the Olive Farm. If you've never even considered living outside your own country, buy it for the sheer poetic prose Drinkwater delivers so beautifully and yet so convincingly that you would swear it was your own diary when you are in peak form (you wish) or at the very least one of a close relative. She has that inescapable capability of making one care deeply about the people and the events in her book. Not since reading Anne Tyler have I experienced this immersion in others daily lives. I was totally enchanted by her incredible writing.
