This is a reprint of the 1965 Edition and the Preface states that the 1965 Edition differed from the 1936 Edition only in a slight rearrangement of the 43 black and white illustrations. The illustrations are largely reproductions of photographs, engravings and drawings. Without minimizing the sensational and unpleasant aspects of the harem system the author presents and authoritative, objecdtive account of its history over a period of 450 years. Harem refers to the women's quarters of the vasto social, political, and administrative unit represted by the Grand Seraglio or Imperial Palace. Penzer reconstructs the huge network of courts, living quarters, reception rooms, kitchens, storehouses, baths, mosques, and dungeons which made up this miniature empire.
