30 B&W plates. Good w/lightly chipped dustjacket (hardcover) 277pp. An account of the institution as it existed in the Palace of the Turkish Sultans with a history of the Grand Seraglio from its foundation to modern times. The merit of Mr. Penzer's book, which was originally published a bare quarter of a century after the Turkish harem came to an ignominious end, is that without minimising the sensational and unpleasant aspects of the system he presents an authoritative, objective account of its history over a period of 450 years.
Very Good. No Jacket. The book is in great cond. lightly age tanned but clean tight with the boards in nice cond. This book is about a way of life we have heard of but don't really understand, This is only about the Grand Seraglio built by the Sultan Muhammad II after the conquest of Constantanople built between 1459-1465 it is a facinating look behind a different way of life, many pictures, and well researched.
