Fair. 12mo-over 6¾-7¾" tall. pp. 192. Contents pages clean and tight but considerably tanned. Card cover complete, with normal age-wear, marks and discolouring. First name of previous owner handwritten on title page. A decent, clean, reading copy. Torture came to be seen as not only wrong but ineffective in the eyes of the British army during WW2. As time went on, however, these attitudes weakened during military expeditions in Cyprus and Aden, until its use and new techniques came to be used regularly by the British army in Northern Ireland. 'By early 1971 there was deliberate and careful use of modern torture techniques-not merely to get information but to perfect the system of Sensory Deprivation for use against civilians wherever the Biriitsh Army and Special Branch should be engaged ' (from the cover). One of a series of Penguin Specials, this remains a horrifying and timely read.
