The first few chapters deal specifically with my great grandfather, who fought for the Confederacy and his brother who did not fight; but, was having a long term relationship with a "woman of color". This relationship was a revelation to our family. This relationship is the springboard for the author's discussion of the larger title issues. This book gave me a new found and deeper understanding of my ancestry, the people, the time, and region.
