The Foundation Pit

by Model12 on Aug 11, 2011

This book by Andrey Platonov operates on more than one level, it's use of language is most unusual and one has to understand Russian literature to get the full meaning. From one who saw the effects of forced "collectivisation" at first hand (Platonov was a building/soil engineer I believe) it is almost a historic record of Stalin's folly for the communists never got agriculture right. Few writers dared to put anything but lies into print in this crazy cruel period of Russian history, pity the peasants who threw the nobility off the land to soon have then replaced by much worse. Read the book.
