THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN is a wonderfully moving fable that addresses the meaning of life, and life after death, in the poignant way that made TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE such an astonishing book. The novel's protagonist is an elderly amusement park maintenance worker named Eddie who, while operating a ride called the 'Free Fall', dies while trying to save a young girl who gets in the way of a falling cart that hurtles to earth. Eddie goes to heaven, where he meets five people who were unexpectedly instrumental in some way in his life. While each guide takes him through heaven, Eddie learns a little bit more about what his time on earth meant, what he was supposed to have learned, and what his true purpose on earth was. Throughout there are dramatic flashbacks where we see scenes from his troubled childhood, his years in the army in the Philippines jungle, and with his first and only love, his wife Marguerite. THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN is the perfect book to follow TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE. Its compellingly affecting themes and lyrical writing will fascinate Mitch Albom's huge readership.

Great book :)
Mitch Albom has a lot of experience with writing. He is a best-selling author, journalist, screenwriter, playwright, radio and television broadcaster and musician. ?The 5 People You Meet In Heaven? is fictional, and philosophical. It really grabbed my attention because of how adventurous and mysterious it was. I always wanted to know more about the new environment Eddie encountered, and who he was going to meet next. It was very interesting and creative how Mitch put the story together. He explained Eddies life in a way in which it easily pieced together. It had a lot of readability, and it he had great choice of adjectives. Although it is about Heaven, there are few references to God. It?s not a religious book, but a great novel I really enjoyed reading. It forced me to think about who I would meet in my Heaven, and whose Heavens I would be apart of, if Heaven was anything like what Mitch explained. I let my mind ponder this question, and think of all kinds of things about the Afterllife. I recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy-to-read, heart-touching story.

Great concept for a book
but lacked content. The story begins with a death and afterdeath experience. After the first chapter the action/drama goes flat and the other 90% of the book is more or less character reflection.
The idea of meeting five different people in heaven that had an influence on your life seemed intriquing. Sort of a "Night before Christmas" meets death, story line. This book doesnt pull it off however. Would be a great first draft.
There is way too much non-important detail and not enough depth in character formation. Your left with trying to piece the story together from long stretches of endless memories. The end was very anti-climatic. I got to the last page and thought "this is it?????"
Publishers Weekly, 2003-08-18 "At the time of his death, Eddie was an old man with a barrel chest and a torso as squat as a soup can," writes Albom, author of the bestselling phenomenon Tuesdays with Morrie, in a brief first novel that is going to make a huge impact on many hearts and minds. Wearing a work shirt with a patch on the chest that reads "Eddie" over "Maintenance," limping around with a cane thanks to an old war injury, Eddie was the kind of guy everybody, including Eddie himself, tended to write off as one of life's minor characters, a gruff bit of background color. He spent most of his life maintaining the rides at Ruby Pier, a seaside amusement park, greasing tracks and tightening bolts and listening for strange sounds, "keeping them safe." The children who visited the pier were drawn to Eddie "like cold hands to a fire." Yet Eddie believed that he lived a "nothing" life-gone nowhere he "wasn't shipped to with a rifle," doing work that "required no more brains than washing a dish." On his 83rd birthday, however, Eddie dies trying to save a little girl. He wakes up in heaven, where a succession of five people are waiting to show him the true meaning and value of his life. One by one, these mostly unexpected characters remind him that we all live in a vast web of interconnection with other lives; that all our stories overlap; that acts of sacrifice seemingly small or fruitless do affect others; and that loyalty and love matter to a degree we can never fathom. Simply told, sentimental and profoundly true, this is a contemporary American fable that will be cherished by a vast readership. Bringing into the spotlight the anonymous Eddies of the world, the men and women who get lost in our cultural obsession with fame and fortune, this slim tale, like Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, reminds us of what really matters here on earth, of what our lives are given to us for. Backed by a $500,000 marketing campaign that includes a 30-city author tour, and boosted by the good will that millions will feel when they see Albom's name on the cover, this wonderful title should grace national fiction bestseller lists for a long time.
