'And then one day a solitary figure appeared, moving toward them across the lifeless plain from the west. One man on a camel...' Paul Bowles' unforgettable short stories portray people facing hostile environments and the innate savagery of humanity. These three unbearably tense tales from sun-drenched and brutal climes tell of vengeance, abandonment, violence and cruelty enjoyed and suffered, in a surreal realm of horror. This book includes: "The Delicate Prey", "A Distant Episode", and "The Circular Ruins".
Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. First edition, first printing. Publisher's rust cloth, with a spider web design to the front board in gray, lettered in gilt, black and silver, black top stain; in the original pictorial rust dust jacket designed by E. McKnight Kauffer, with an illustration of two cloaked figures to the front panel, lettered in white and black. Fine book; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, a few tiny nicks to the spine ends, toning to the spine, rubbing to the front panel. Overall, a very good and sturdy copy. The Delicate Prey is the first American edition of Bowles' first collection of short stories, published only a year after the success of his debut novel The Sheltering Sky. Specifically, it includes "Call at Corazón, " "At Pasa Rojo, " "The Circular Valley, " "The Fourth Day Out from Santa Cruise, " and "A Distant Episode, " among others. Notably, the first English edition precedes the American edition by three months; published by John Lehmann under the title A Little Stone, the first English edition did not include two stories from this volume, "Pages from a Cold Point" and "The Delicate Prey, " which were censored due to their controversial subject matter.
Near Fine in Very Good dustwrapper. His second book and first collection of stories. Dustwrapper with usual fading to spine and chips at the heel affecting the bottom portion of the word "House" in "Random House" and leaving a corresponding small area of the book's spine darkened.
