The Civil War: Strange and Fascinating Facts is a treasure trove of information about the deadliest war in American history. Each chapter develops a topic such as weapons, music, the Union blockade, spies, Confederate money and symbols, riots on the home front, submarines, naval warfare, atrocities, folklore, battle casualties, and many other interesting subjects. Most of the book reads like an encyclopedia but a few chapters present the information in narrative form. Being written in 1960 it is quite likely that some of the information may be dated. Nevertheless, students and teachers of the Civil War will want this book on their shelf as a valuable reference tool. The book includes a bibliography but no index. In sum, this is a concise and useful book for those interested in the many aspects of the American Civil War.
