When I began studying the Holocaust, I was under the mistaken view that the Jews never fought back or tried to survive. I was completely wrong, and the more books and articles that I read I find there were many instances of people fighting for their lives. This book is one of those stories -- and it needed to be told as well as the carnage from the Final Solution. The Bielski family were in business, and not the kind of people that allowed themselves to be used. Rather than being shot outright or confined to a ghetto prior to being murdered, these people chose hiding in the forest. What is most amazing that we are not talking about five or ten people. By the time the German's were driven out, the Bielski brothers saved hundreds of others. It was not a walk in the garden. They had to feed and protect a steady growth of people fleeing to join them and assorted strays they adopted over time. They were not only in danger from discovery by the Germans, but with many of the Poles and partisan groups, Jews were close to worthless. These groups in other places in Poland had murdered Jews or informed the German's of there location. They had to face all of these threats. Stories of the Holocaust usually have horrible endings, but this book is inspirational in that these people survived inspite of the seemingly insurmountable odds. You must read this book to know that a few people can and often do make a difference.
