This book generated lots of discussion in our book club. Some of us did not go in for such mystic stuff...but still had a lot to say about the ideas brought up in this book. It starts out very literal and moves to the mystic. Enjoy a quick good read that will give you lots to think about!

Paulo Coelho has a unique and beautiful way of story telling. This novel is filled with adventure and mystery while inspiring the reader to push their limits. It's a great book to escape in and gives the reader a renewed sense of limitless possibilities. It's majestic storyline traps the reader from the first sentence!

One of the most uplifting books I've read in quite a while. It was a Christmas gift from my son and I advised him to read it. Especially good for young adults wondering about their future. Sound advice and a great story all in one. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Publishers Weekly, 1993-03-22 This inspirational fable by Brazilian author and translator Coelho has been a runaway bestseller throughout Latin America and seems poised to achieve the same prominence here. The charming tale of Santiago, a shepherd boy, who dreams of seeing the world, is compelling in its own right, but gains resonance through the many lessons Santiago learns during his adventures. He journeys from Spain to Morocco in search of worldly success, and eventually to Egypt, where a fateful encounter with an alchemist brings him at last to self-understanding and spiritual enlightenment. The story has the comic charm, dramatic tension and psychological intensity of a fairy tale, but it's full of specific wisdom as well, about becoming self-empowered, overcoming depression, and believing in dreams. The cumulative effect is like hearing a wonderful bedtime story from an inspirational psychiatrist. Comparisons to The Little Prince are appropriate; this is a sweetly exotic tale for young and old alike. 50,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo. (June) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved
Publishers Weekly, 2001-07-02 Brazilian writer Coelho has published five titles in 45 languages in 120 countries, and has sold 23 million books. It's easy to see why. This charming, simple and well-written allegory tells of a boy, Santiago, who has the imagination and courage to follow his "Personal Legend." Santiago finds fairy godfathers at many turns who help him learn to keep up his courage, and to read omens and his own heart. The book's inspirational message follow your heart and do your own thing is oblique enough, to allow readers to interpret it in any way they choose, with whatever degree and form of spirituality one adheres to: "To realize one's destiny is a person's only obligation." But apparently only men need apply; a woman's destiny is to wait for her hero to find his treasure and return home to her. The real treasure here is Jeremy Irons. His intriguing, subtle and powerful performance carries us along on the boy's adventures, into his confusions and insights, through discussions with kings and animals, through the desert and the sun and even through the philosophical passages. Based on the Harper San Francisco hardcover. (Mar.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
