Speak Mandarin is a thorough and expanded revision of Speak Chinese published in 1948 following two decades of classroom use at Yale University Institute of Far Eastern Langages. This was the program used by the United States Air Force and mission agencies to train their missionaries in fluent Mandarin conversation. Yale developed a romanization that follows American English pronounciation. The emphasis is on spoken Chinese Mandarin introducing a vocabulary of 850 words and doesn't use complicated Chinese charcters in these twenty lessons of conversational Chinese. The objective of the of Speak Mandarin is to present the basic structural patterns of colloquial Mandarin. The vocabulary is used in a series of dialogues from everyday life. The Speak Mandarin, Student Workbook , provides more vocabulary drill and pattern drills to aid in converstional skills with the new sounds, words, and patterns of the language..
