Set in the 19th-century American South, this is the story a poor African-American sharecropping family, their faithful dog, Sounder, and the eldest boy's efforts to learn how to read and help his mother to support the family after his father is arrested for stealing a ham. When Sounder chases after the Sheriff's deputies he is shot and he crawls away, seemingly to die. For weeks the boy thinks that he has lost both his father and his dog, but then Sounder comes back, lame and missing an ear. The boy continues to search for his father, until a few years later the father returns home, disabled from a quarry accident. Reunited at last, the father and Sounder go on one final hunting trip together...

Here's a little bit about the book "Sounder"?
It was first published in the 1960's and the story is about a black family living in the South. It tells of that family's hard times, a great coon dog named Sounder, and how they all pull together and survive what has been thrown their way in life.
Lovely piece of literature. I'd recommend it for anyone to read (teens, adults, or boys and girls 10 & up). I love the author's writing style? how the names of the people are never revealed--you only know Sounder's name. It seems to keep the other characters in a slight obscurity, as if there is a shadow over their face and you cannot see the person? but yet, you know everything about them. I like how the author did that for this book.
Superb, and excellent! I will be sure to read "Sounder" again someday.

A story for every generation...
The story of a black family living in the deep south who is forced to work as sharecroppers in order to provide minimal food and shelter for their family is not an uncommon subject of authors. Sounder, however, tells more than just the story of a family's existence. Reader's will be swept along a journey of discovery in which a family grows in strength through the trials and suffering of their father, son and beloved dog, Sounder.
