Original quarter black Nigerian goatskin over evergreen silk-covered board, gilt-lettered on spine; publisher's cloth slipcase. Laid-in is the Whitman/Siskind issue of the Limited Editions Club Letter, series 50, vol. 4, number 560, Sept. 1990. Siskind was long associated with the Abstract Expressionist group, and one of only a few photographers within that circle. He is also a major figure from the Black Mountain School: he met Harry Callahan while both taught there in 1950, and the two later joined the faculty of the IIT Institute of Design in Chicago (founded by László Moholy-Nagy as the New Bauhaus). In 1971 he followed Callahan (who had left in 1961) to teach for the rest of his life at the Rhode Island School of Design. "Through his use of form, emotional timbre, and iconography, Siskind's work reflects one man's struggle to understand his life in relation to the world. His imagery, on one level, is autobiographical, encompassing all the many political, social, sexual, aesthetic, and introspective observations of a long and complex life" (Carl Chiarenza). This is his last body of work, the images near his home in Providence, Rhode Island "of tar poured into the cracks of light-colored concrete roads, forming swirls and curves and parallel lines, cheerful or brooding markings on a gritty surface that is rendered almost microscopically and enlarged into a striking textural background for each of the six photographs."
