Pynchon is arguably the most important author in modern American literature. His novels V, The Crying of Lot 49 and Gravity's Rainbow are astoundingly good. This collection is made up of his earliest short stories. They are literate, interesting and entertaining. What they are not, is as fully gripping and fascinating as his later work. If you are already a fan of Pynchon's work, and haven't read these yet, then by all means do so. If you have not read anything by the master, start with V.
