As one of the scientists on Scott's Last Expedition, "Silas" Wright's diary provides an interesting and necessary perspective on the epic tale, not covered by naval commander Scott or chronicler Cherry-Garrard. Add to this Wright's distinctive personality and you have a book that's not just fascinating but often rather funny. The editors have done a marvellous job of providing context and filling in gaps in the narrative (Wright being more concerned with physics than writing in his diary, at times), and his daughter Pat's ink illustrations are fantastic.
