Classic Down East Humor
I practically grew up reading the Letters From Saturday Cove column by Cap'n Perc Sane in The National Fisherman newspaper. They provided hysterical accounts of life in an imaginary, but completely believable, part of rural seacoast Maine. In many ways they were the lobstering and clam-digging equivalent of the famous Bert & I stories.
This slim collection of letters has a number of classics that recount Cove life and the unique characters that live there. There's also a few letters that had a tone that was new to me. In these the author provided poignant glimpses of growing up to be a fisherman himself, under the influence of a stern but careing old salt of a father.
Altogether, Saturday Cove is a delight for anyone that loves the dry laconic humor of Down East story telling. I could only wish that many more of those great newspaper columns had been included.
