Dr. Ferrol Sams has written a partially autobiographic story about a young boy growing up in the rural south with such humor, honesty, and feeling! The three books in this series continue the story as the boy enters college with an interest in becoming a physicain, and then enters the world at war. Be ready to chortle with laughter at Porter Osborne's deviltry and intelligent insights! This is a great book!
This is a truly wonderful book about a country boy from middle Georgia shortly after the depression when money was still very scarce. He was very young, small of stature, but very well endowed with intellect. The book follows his escapades thru his years in undergraduate school at a very straight-laced Baptist college in middle Georgia. The pranks his fertile mind conjured up were almost unbelievable. The book is somewhat more than fiction. One of my best friends followed him at this University and was taught by some of the same professors. The main character in the book left a reputation at the school which is still talked about. The author, Ferroll Sams, is in my view the 20th century Mark Twain. You will spend as much time laughing as you spend reading this great book
Interesting or humorous events are interspersed within a dreadfully slow and meandering story. The "good parts" are few and far between. Highly recommended for those with insomnia or other sleep disorders.
