Peter Stanziale. G PB. Louise Dickinson Rich hailed Ridge Runner as the "most authentic book about the Maine woods and country that I have. Ever read." Averill began his career as a woods clerk for the Great Northern Paper Company. During his 12 years spent working in the big logging camps, on the drives, hunting and cruising on foot, he learned many things about the woods and won a reputation as a crack pistol and rifle shot. After WWI he returned to the woods as a warden for the Maine Dept of Inland Fisheries and Game where he remained until his death in 1946. He contributed stories to many national magazines, but Ridge Runner is his only book. Tanning to outer edges and fore-edge.
