Inside the paralysed shell, she struggled, she strained. She looked up into the eyes of her killer. Into the eyes of a friend. Why? Every cop gets angry when a police officer is killed. And Lieutenant Eve Dallas is no exception. Throwing every resource into solving Amarylis Coltraine's brutal murder, Eve encounters bitter opposition from Coltraine's fellow officers, who are desperate to take over the case. But when Eve receives a strange parcel containing Coltraine's badge and gun together with a note threatening the imminent arrival of her own ID, she knows the case has just got personal. Then a link to millionaire Alex Ricker, son of a criminal she had put behind bars, heats things up even further. Ricker was romantically involved with Amarylis - did she leak information to him and then have a change of heart? Eve must put herself in extreme danger to get to the truth ...
Excellent just couldn't put it down. Characters are so well developed now. Can't wait for the next one in this wonderful series

One of the best books in the Death series. Eve's relationship with Morris makes it work. The author has shown us the way Eve and Morris clicked in prior books; this just brings it closer to home. One more friend to add to Eve's confusion. This one should have her getting her Captain's bars regardless of her relationship to Roark. Whitney should just do it and keep her on the job as investigator.

I loved this book. I wish I could give it more stars.... You have to read it. There is so much I could say but I don't want to give anything away..
Publishers Weekly, 2008-12-08 At the start of bestseller Robb's megablast 28th novel to feature Lt. Eve Dallas (after Salvation in Death), Eve is dismayed to discover at a Manhattan crime scene that the victim is a friend, Det. Amaryllis Coltraine, who's been fatally zapped by her own stun gun. Dallas uncovers a connection to Coltraine's ex-boyfriend, Alex Ricker, whose father, a notorious criminal serving a life sentence at the Omega Penal Colony, blames Dallas and her husband, Roarke, for his imprisonment. Humorous touches, like the wild poolside wedding shower Dallas must abruptly leave after receiving word of a prime suspect found shot to death, provide relief from the intensity of the murder investigation. In a nice paranormal twist, Dallas uses dream visits with Coltraine to help expose a devious killer whose identity is a stunner. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) has a real gift for keeping this long-running thriller series fresh. (Feb.) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.
