When I started this series, I did not realize it was a trilogy. I started with the 2nd in the series, "The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs". Since I found this book so witty and dry and down right hilarious, I had to go out and pick up Irregular Verbs. I enjoy words/vocabulary, so I was excited to think this book would make some interesting fun about what the title indicates. It was painfully slow, and not very humorous. But it helped to understand where Professor Igelfeld "started" in this series. If I had started with this book, I never would have finished this book and certainly would never go for book #2. But after laughing my head off and literally seeing the Professor and his antics, I trudged through this one. And it makes me very hopeful for book #3, "At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances." So if you do not mind getting a very slow start, go ahead and check this series out! Unlike most movies, Part II was much better than Part I!!! When I read the last of the series I wil review it as well. In fact, I was so impressed by book #2 and let down with book #1, I even wrote Alexander in person to tell him of my experience. And surprisingly, I actually received a response in return.

A Medium Funny book
A small series of short stories describing the adventures and misfortunes of a german professor of romance philology. It is supposed to be a charicature of the academic world and makes fun of the selfobsessed professor and his passion for portuguese irregular verbs. Being a linguist I might have found the book funnier if the linguistic setup had been more pronounced, containing actual information about languages instead of made up information and sort of cheap jokes that could be made about any academic field - I suppose this won't matter to the casual reader. I found the book amusing but not as funny as some acquaintances of mine who enthusiastically reccomended me the book.
