This is The First Novel In The Bestselling Ooutlander Series. Now a major TV series. What if your future was the past? 1946, and Claire Randall goes to the Scottish Highlands with her husband Frank. It's a second honeymoon, a chance to learn how war has changed them and to re-establish their loving marriage. But one afternoon, Claire walks through a circle of standing stones and vanishes into 1743, where the first person she meets is a British army officer - her husband's six-times great-grandfather. Unfortunately, Black Jack Randall is not the man his descendant is, and while trying to escape him, Claire falls into the hands of a gang of Scottish outlaws, and finds herself a Sassenach - an outlander - in danger from both Jacobites and Redcoats. Marooned amid danger, passion and violence, her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives. (Previously published as Cross Stitch).
Loved the book. Can't wait for the next one and then another and another....so good. ....^i^

Outlander Made Easy
If you've seen the Outlander previews on Starz and want to know more about the book series, Diana Gabaldon's brilliant tales of Jaime and Claire start with Outlander. The audio makes all those difficult accents and unfamiliar words a breeze.
I love the fact the audio is unabridged. Even then, I don't want it to end.

A Step Back in Time
As the first in a great series, Outlander embodies not only great writing, but historical accuracy...a rare combination. As you read the series you become invested in the characters and what is happening in their lives. A more than enjoyable read and one of those books it's hard to put down.
Publishers Weekly, 1993-10-25 Time-traveler Claire Randall returns to 18th-century Scotland in this compulsively readable sequel to Outlander. (Dec.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved
Publishers Weekly, 1991-05-31 Absorbing and heartwarming, this first novel lavishly evokes the land and lore of Scotland, quickening both with realistic characters and a feisty, likable heroine. English nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall and husband Frank take a second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands in 1945. When Claire walks through a cleft stone in an ancient henge, she's somehow transported to 1743. She encounters Frank's evil ancestor, British captain Jonathan ``Black Jack'' Randall, and is adopted by another clan. Claire nurses young soldier James Fraser, a gallant, merry redhead, and the two begin a romance, seeing each other through many perilous, swashbuckling adventures involving Black Jack. Scenes of the Highlanders' daily life blend poignant emotions with Scottish wit and humor. Eventually Sassenach (outlander) Claire finds a chance to return to 1945, and must choose between distant memories of Frnak and her happy, uncomplicated existence with Jamie. Claire's resourcefulness and intelligent sensitivity make the love-conquers-all, happily-ever-after ending seem a just reward. Doubleday Book Club main selection, Literary Guild alternate.
