It takes a writer of John Toland's stature to write a book about World War I and not have the reader drift off to sleep. It also helps to focus on 1918 when America helped infuse vigor and energy into the bloody slugfest that was the war in Europe. Toland spends a great deal of time covering the momentous events that were driving the fight. There is the rise of Communism (and Wilson's shilly-shallying over whether to intervene or not), the political intriguing amongst the Kaiser and the General Staff, and Pershing's fight to keep American troops under American command. There was a lot more than met the eye in 1918 that must be recognized before the end of the War To End All Wars can truly be understood. For that job, you need to read this book.
