Sanyika Shakur is pressured as a peer, and has no choice but to follow the path of other "gang-bangers" on the streets of L.A. Once he is imprisoned, he is touched by a man's word's, and changes his ignorant actions, by doing the right thing.
This book is engaging and valuble for the insight it sheds on the world of gangs. But there is a questionable aspect of the book, the fact that the author seems to express no clear rorse for his horrible crimes. The blurb on the jacket touts; "A complete political and personal transformation followed". What seems to have happened, is that the author wishes to get the reader to sympathise with the causes of his crime: hios ghetto childhood. His turning to education while in prison seems to be a way of strengthning his independence against the system, rather than truly coming to terms against the killings he accomplished. Scott writes a best-selling book, however, what becomes of his vitctims and their familes? A disturbing book, but an important social document.
