This spellbinding story is an account of the life of Karol Wojtyla's life as a young man who managed to survive the brutal domination of his country,Poland, by the Nazis. When Nazi Germany was defeated, his country was subjected to a cruel Soviet regime. Catholic priests quickly became the targets of the government. Many were imprisoned or executed. As a young priest he managed to do his work and stay alive. The movie takes the viewer to his election to the papacy. It makes no difference if one is Catholic, Protestant, or Jew. This is a powerful story that should be appreciated for the courage, faith, and determination of one man who eventually helped to end the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe. I would suggest that the viewer read Peggy Noonan's book JOHN PAUL THE GREAT. It is a good followup to the movie.
