Very Good. This is the scarce first edition in an unspecified later (before 1876) printing of the first cocktail recipe book published in the United States. It has become an icon of bar literature and a very collectible piece of Americana. Its author, Jerry Thomas, is often referred to as "the father of American mixology." William Grimes describes Thomas's work as having "laid down the principles for formulating mixed drinks of all categories and established the image of the bartender as a creative professional." ¿ NYT, Oct. 31, 2007. Thomas was the principal bartender at the Metropolitan Hotel, New York, and at the Planter's House in St. Louis and inventor of such drinks as the Tom and Jerry and the Blue Blazer. He became quite a famous personality, and his life still inspires interest and research. The current cocktail craze finds inspiration in Thomas's more adventurous concoctions, even the re-emergence of absinthe. The first printing of this work bears the price $1.50 on the front cover; the copy offered bears the price $2.50. It was printed between 1862 (the date on the copyright page) and some time before 1876, when a new copyright was entered at the Library of Congress. Original embossed blue cloth boards; spine and cover title and cover illustration in gilt. Rebacked; spine ends and corners very skillfully repaired; new endpapers. A very good, attractive copy.
