I bought this book to read to my children because it has talking animals (I love making up voices for the characters). Although the kids and I were not familiar with a "tom ten", we quickly figured out it was a mischievous elf.
The tom ten has a voracious appetite and decides to steal the hen's eggs for meals. After seeing a friend's goslings, Henny wants to have chicks of her own so her good pal, Hedgie, hatches a plan to help. (Pun intended)
All's well that ends well in the book, but it opens up the door to conversations about eggs and whether or not we are eating baby chickens when we eat scrambled eggs. (Kind of wasn't prepared for that.)
Anyway, the illustrations are beautiful and the story is a favorite in our house. I would definitely recommend this for your child's library!
