Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange headline this fact-based drama centered on the two eccentric relatives of Jackie Kennedy-Onassis who served as the subject of David and Albert Maysles' similarly-titled 1975 documentary. Directed, produced, and co-written (along with Patricia Rozema) by Michael Sucsy, Grey Gardens tells the story of Big Edie (Lange) and Little Edie (Barrymore), the aunt and cousin of Kennedy-Onassis respectively. The reclusive socialites made headlines across the country when the health department threatened to raid their sprawling, flea-and-raccoon-infested twenty-eight room East Hampton, NY mansion in the early-1970s, prompting Kennedy-Onassis herself to intervene in an attempt to save the family name. Jane Tripplehorn stars as former first lady Kennedy-Onassis in a film also featuring Daniel Baldwin, Ken Howard, Malcolm Gets, and Ayre Gross. Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The perfomances in this film are excellent and the storyline goes some way in answering questions raised by the documentary: why did Mr Beale leave? who was 'Gould'? etc.
It is an HBO film, however, and the music is terrible and the ending mawkish. These are minor drawbacks from an otherwise well made and very well researched film.

A refection of the original Documentary
I had to get this movie almost as soon as it came out on DVD. I was totally in love with the original documentary and wanted to see how this movie would hold up against it's inspiration. As far as the reenactments from the original documentary, they were done excellently and very accurately. The rest of the movies tells much of the younger years of both women as mother and daughter. It fills in a lot of blanks that could not be shown, only half explained by the women in the documentary. It sheds light on how they ended up in poverty. The acting is superb! This movie held my attention throughout.
