Slothrop gets excited, and then, as Thomas Pynchon puts it in his sibilant opening sentence, 'a screaming comes across the sky', heralding an angel of death, a V-2 rocket. Soon Tyrone is on the run from legions of bizarre enemies through the phantasmagoric horrors of Germany. Gravity's Rainbow is never a single story, but a proliferation of characters - Pirate Prentice, Teddy Bloat, Tantivy Mucker-Maffick, Saure Bummer, and more - and events that tantalize the reader with suggestions of vast patterns only just past our comprehension. It is a blizzard of references to science, history, high culture, and the lowest of jokes and among the most important novels of our time. Winner of the National Book Award.Hide synopsis

The author's third novel. 19, 000 first printing copies were produced, of which 15, 000 were paperbound (as here). An exceptionally influential novel, winner of the William Dean Howells Medal (for the best work of fiction to appear in the U.S. over a five-year period), the National Book Award, and a 1973 Nebula Award nominee. "A sprawling slipstream novel about a World War II psychological warfare unit full of weird characters, one of whom seems to be determining the pattern of V-2 rocket attacks by his sexual activities but refuses to submit to study and possible control. Extraordinarily elaborate black comedy."-Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-885. "U.S. writer, all of whose works are fabulations which resemble sf under some interpretations, though the paranoia-wracked worlds his protagonists inhabit defeat any secure reading of the malign figurations of reality...Enormous and complex, GRAVITY'S RAINBOW offers no repose for a secure reading, but the search for its main protagonist (whose sexual climaxes predict and attract rockets from the V-2s on) fabulously posits an sf world...Pynchon's general concerns with entropy, paranoia and communication have had a fruitful effect on some sf writers."-Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 981. Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 4-348. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 4A-213. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 915-20. Touch of rubbing to spine panel at lower rear corner, minute creases to three corner tips, a nearly fine copy. A nice copy of the bulky trade paperback, now somewhat elusive in superior condition. I have read GR numerous times and each time it is still an education. The book really does require a couple of readings to grasp all its intricacies, and there are passages I still don't understand, but overall, the experience is more than worth it. So, not for the faint of heart, but stick with it ...
I picked up Gravity's Rainbow along with Slow Learner, a collection of short stories, after seeing a bumper sticker that said ?My other car is a Pynchon novel?. Though not an avid reader I do tend towards classics, classic Sci-Fi in particular.
I enjoyed Slow Learner but I guess I?m just not ...
