A #1 New York Times bestseller--the devastating truth about the effects of wheat, sugar, and carbs on the brain, with a 4-week plan to achieve optimum health. Renowned neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, blows the lid off a topic that's been buried in medical literature for far too long: carbs are destroying your brain. And not just unhealthy carbs, but even healthy ones like whole grains can cause dementia, ADHD, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression, and much more. Dr. Perlmutter explains what happens when the brain encounters common ingredients in your daily bread and fruit bowls, why your brain thrives on fat and cholesterol, and how you can spur the growth of new brain cells at any age. He offers an in-depth look at how we can take control of our "smart genes" through specific dietary choices and lifestyle habits, demonstrating how to remedy our most feared maladies "without drugs." With a revolutionary 4-week plan, GRAIN BRAIN teaches us how we can reprogram our genetic destiny for the better. GRAIN BRAIN is a #1 New York Times bestseller and a finalist for a 2013 Books for a Better Life award.

Dr. Perlmutter touches ALL the bases for this home run of a book. He is uniquely qualified and educated to put it all together as to how and why excess sugar/carbs are the real killers. As it turns out, Dr. Atkins was right all along. Higher fat, low carb/low-to-no sugar and good protein with each meal is the way our bodies have worked for since we showed up in this world. He has excellent studies to back up everything he says and recommends. The cures for the diseases and health problems we have now are curable by changing our high carb/sugars/added sugars, low fat diet to the higher fat (including cholesterol that your body makes when you don't eat enough of it -- it is essential to our brains) lower carb/sugars/no added sugars and good protein with food and supplements when needed. I knew a long time ago when I was studying biochemistry/nutrition in my college career (undergraduate and graduate degrees) because human breast milk has MORE cholesterol than cow/goat/sheep milk. Regardless of your religious or non-religious beliefs, all mammalian milk is species specific and NOT designed to set up humans for heart disease!! The cause of our ills turns out to be sugar -- who knew -- I did. And now someone with initials beyond mine (MS, RD) has documented the case to perfection. He also has a new book, "Brain Maker" that further documents the effects of diet on our bodies and brains. Our high carb/low fat plans promoted by our government is the cause of our major new health problems today. But it can all be changed if we don't listen to the USDA (A=Agriculture and it should be Alzheimer's because the low fat, high carb/sugar diet recommendation on "My Plate" cause exactly that). Now go forth, read the book and spread the word.

This book will help you to have a mind right up until the time they are peering over you in your box saying, 'Don't she look natural.' So many of the things we have been told are not true. How great to have them exposed.
Don't be afraid of this book it is worth the asking price and will make a huge difference in your life.
Publishers Weekly, 2013-08-19 In his latest book, neurologist Perlmutter (The Better Brain Book) declares war on a common foodstuff, attributing a bewilderingly wide assortment of maladies to the consumption of gluten, a substance found in bread and other stock foods. Contrasting modern humans against idealized humans of the distant past, Perlmutter concludes that the former, whose average life expectancy at birth is about twice that of their Paleolithic ancestors, have gone off the proper track. He addresses the churlish objection that gluten has been part of the human diet for many millennia by firmly asserting that recent changes to crops have transformed a once-safe food into a terrible scourge. The book features health advice, a number of gluten-free recipes, and details on some relevant case studies. Lauded by such nonconsensus pundits as Mehmet Oz and William Davis, Perlmutter offers readers a comfortably simplistic model for thinking about carbs. Agent: Bonnie Solow, Solow Literary Enterprises.
