Teddy Roosevel wrote in his Preface 'Gouverneur Morris like his friend Alexander Hamilton had thatattractive touch of purple but he was too unstable and erratic to leave a profound mark on political developments. He performed two or three conspicuous feats, rendered several marked services to the country, and he embodied to a peculiar degree both he qualitites which made the Federalist parts so brilliant, and those other qualities which finally brought about the downfall. Morris stood for its weakness as well as for its strength.
