Inspirational Book/ Great read
?It doesn?t really matter what colour you are. If you?re good, you?ll be recognized. Because people, even if they?re prejudiced, are going to want the best. You just have to make to make being the best your goal in life.?
Strong words, which were quoted directly from the book, Gifted Hands. An inspiring book that was written by Ben Carson and Cecil Murphy.
The book focuses on the life of Ben Carson, a very successful neurosurgeon and father who took on many surgical cases that no one else would, saving lives that were thought to be as good as dead.
Growing up a with an older brother into a very poor and eventual single parent family, was no easy feat for the little dark skinned boy who dreamed of one day becoming a doctor. However through the determination and strength of his mother, he learnt that anything is possible with hard work, some hope, a little faith, a touch of love and of course strong trust in God.
What is very admirable about this book is that it didn?t only show his successes, they showed that he too needed a good push, sometimes falling along the way. It lets you know that at the end of it all he was just like any of us, human. He once said that, ?Some people are born to work, and others are pushed into it by their mothers.? Very funny indeed but doesn?t it make you think of you own parents and the things that they do for us? His mother worked two or three jobs at a time and did what she had to do to make her children learn the value of hard work and a good education. A good education, which can be seen in the writing style of this book.
When you read Gifted Hands it seems as if Ben Carson was in front of you, telling his story to you personally. It gave you something to look forward to as you continue his book, standing in his shoes for even the smallest of moments.
As you continue on coming closer to what the end of the story holds, it just keeps getting better and by the time you have actually finished, you?ll be left with the feeling of wanting more.
It?s worth mentioning, that you don?t need to be a doctor or some kind of medical student to understand the medical terms used in the book and I must say that is one of the best things about it. You can relate to it, no matter who you are, or what you want to be, what colour skin you have, how you look and regardless of your personality. It will touch you in one way of the other.
So finally this book gets four stars, for its all round inspiration and positivity. Hopefully the movie starring Cuba Goodings Jr. by the same name is, at least, half as good as the book was.
Now to end it off you are left with one last quote from Ben Carson himself, do enjoy. ?To THINK BIG and to use our talents doesn?t mean that we won?t have difficulties along the way. We will- we all do. How we view those problems determine how we end up. If we chose to see the obstacles in our path as barriers, we stop trying. However, if we choose to see the obstacles as hurdles, we can leap over them. Successful people don?t have fewer problems. They have determined that nothing will stop them from going forward.?
