I read this book aloud, over and over and over, when my my two nephews came for a visit and contracted chicken pox. They were quarantined for two weeks, and the one thing that kept them happy was this book. I have been told this book is too upsetting for young readers---mainly second graders. I showed it to one child and let her "borrow" it! She ended up moving, and she took my book with her!! The copy I had was a family heirloom---a first edition.
