Toronto-New York-London. D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc. 1962. First Edition. 8vo. (8 ½ x 6). 239 pp. Photo frontispiece. Black and white photos. Edited by Eugene V. Connett. Finely crafted stories and essays by a superb writer. The book is bound in red cloth with gilt titles on the spine and front cover. Pictorial dust jacket. Just slight wear to the cloth, otherwise very good in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing to the corners. A nice book.
What a great book! Spiller writes in a style unlike modern writers. He seldom uses the word "I" except to note his presence in a hunting situation; and, he is witty and considerate of Grouse, Woodcock, dogs and men. Spiller brings unique insights in upland hunting skills and knowledge; yet, they are interwoven in stories that may bring a tear to the eye in one paragraph, and an out-loud laugh in another. I read his work for the first time this year and am now addicted.
