Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Presentation Copy inscribed to "Frederick Harrison from the author." Frederick Harrison (1831-1923) was the English author and Positivist. The bookplate of Harrison is pasted down beneath the inscription. Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) was one of the most prolific writers of the early 20th century, covering a wide range of genres and subjects. In Danton, he provides an interesting biography of Georges Danton, one of the major figures of the French Revolution. Despite his early role in the revolution, Danton was later convicted of financial misdeeds and corruption and sent to the guillotine. He correctly prophesied that Robespierre would follow him. Very good in black cloth boards with gilt title to spine and front board. Rubbing to covers, closed tear to top of rear hinge, and minor wear to edges. The end pages are a bit browned and there is a small chip to the front free end page. The interior is otherwise clean with bright text. Includes frontispiece with tissue guard. Index, 440 pages plus 8 pages of advertisements. LIT/052010.
