Unconventional Teacher

by piafinn on Jul 25, 2012

Edythe Amstel takes a teaching job in a small town in Nebraska to escape her family life. She is unconventional in her teaching methods and many of the parents in the farming community see no use in teaching kids other than the basics. When she broaches the topic of women's suffrage and wants to take the older children to hear Susan B. Anthony, she pushes the townspeople too far. She also has feelings for Joel Townsend, the uncle and guardian of two of her students, but she has raised all her siblings when her mother died and doesn't want a ready made family. In spite of the title, no one actually courts her as she is a career woman with no interest in the men who are pursuing her. It was a good read.
