Castner's Cutthroats, by the author's own words is a work of "faction", meaning that the story is based on true combat in the Aleutians against the Japanese invasion in 1942, but names were changed and events were made more exciting thru fictional exploits.
Colonel Castner's Alaska Scouts were men of grit. Outdoorsmen..woodsmen..hunters, trappers and the like. Strong, physical men that could survive -50 degrees below zero temperatures on bleak icescapes of the harsh enviornment Adak, Attu, Kiska, etc.
These special breeds used their abilities to seek intelligence about the Japanese installations by means of stealth. When push came to shove, they could fight at close range like tigers.
Excellent read for those of us who treasure war stories.
