Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 0939683059. , . 41 and viii, 35 pages, well illustrated, cloth, DJ, very good. 7 by 10 inches. Includes envelope with two folding color plates. Translated from the German by Robert A. Hoyem. Edited by Manfred H. Beutter and George A. Hoyem. From the prologue: "Captain A. Mattenheimer, 14th Bavarian Infantry Regiment, organized this study to describe and illustrate the gradual evolution of breech-loading ammunition for rifles from the combustible paper case cartridge ignited by percussion cap to the early centerfire constructed with a built-up case. The period is ca. 1841 to 1868, the year of publication. The specimens illustrated and discussed are continental European, American, and English. In the original publication, the drawings were colleted on two four-color plates tipped in at the end of the book. The drawings grouped together allow for comparisons, but it is awkward to study the descriptions and follow the drawings at the same time. In this English translation, the drawings are reproduced and placed in the text with their descriptions. The color plates are also included at the end of the book following the original German text. This study is unique in the literature of small arms and ammunition. No other author in any language has disassembled primitive ammunition, section it, and so carefully traced the efforts to create efficient ammunition for breechloading arms. Some of the specimens shown here are marvels of ingenuity. "
