Engaging and humorous memoir

by Nitemare1116 on Oct 17, 2009

Of all the "personal recollections" books by former astronauts I have read, this is the very best. My fellow Scorpio Mike Collins is at once witty, urbane, informative and nostalgic. He doesn't blow his own horn too much and gives plenty of credit and gratitude to family, friends and co-workers. He skilfully takes us through his childhood, his military career with all the fighter pilot stories, his attempts and finally success at being chosen an astronaut, and the flow of his personal life throughout the process. Of course the book reaches two great climaxes when he describes the two missions he flew in space, Gemini 10 and Apollo 11. Finally, he leaves the space program and goes to work for the State Department. Some of the very best memoir I have ever read. Pick it up today!
