John painted in a Post-Impressionist style, influenced by the French masters. Although he became an academician in 1921, his bohemian personality was reputedly the model for the artist in Joyce Cary's novel, The Horse's Mouth. Aside from aristocrats and celebrities (W. B. Yeats, the Marchesa Casati, the cellist Guilhermina Suggia, Wyndham Lewis, George Bernard Shaw, Arthur Symons, T. E. Lawrence, Thomas Hardy, James Joyce, and Dylan Thomas), he's also remembered for his depictions of Roma (gypsies) and Jamaicans--works reproduced in this fine monograph.
