Very Good. 4to-over 9¾"-12" tall. Approximately 220 pages, chiefly illustrations (some color); 28 cm Near fine. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Age toning. CONTENTS: The unstrung harp; The listening attic; The doubtful guest; The object-lesson; The bug book; The fatal lozenge; The hapless child; The curious sofa; The willowdale handcar; The gashlycrumb tinies; The insect god; The west wing; The wuggly ump; The sinking spell; The remembered visit.
I love Gorey's artwork, but had never read any of his books. I LOVE the art in this volume, but was very disappointed in the books themselves. Some make no sense at all except as a way to display his art, which I assume was the purpose. Others are more than a little too violent for my taste, and a few were somewhat sexual in content. This is definitely NOT a book for children!
I give the artwork a 4-rating, but the stories only a 1.
