Among the many books written about elephants, this one stands out as being truly remarkable and with many original, exquisite photographs, some of them in colour. Iain and Oria Douglas-Hamilton spent fve years getting to know their ways and habits at the Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania. There were four hundred and fifty African elephants there. Oria took the unique photographs of the elephants in this book.
Much has been written about the wisdom and loving nature of elephants. However, some also have a different side to them which can be quite threatening and frightening, as we read in this book. But to know them is to love them, as anyone who has spent some time in their midst will affirm. The authors also succumbed to their charm. Oria also gave birth to their daughter while they were there. This is their story of their life, experiences and adventures with 'their' elephants, young and old, and we are richer through their firsthand knowledge of these wonderful, majestic and endearing animals.
