"African Kingdoms" is one of 21 volumes in the Great Ages of Man series published by Time-Life books in the 1960s. Like other books in this series, the illustrations supplement the narrative. This book is a survey of the Sub-Sahran African kingdoms which flourished from around 700 B.C. until the 19th century when some of these kingdoms were subjected to European imperialism. Basil Davidson's purpose is to make African history more clear and credible. This book is a combination of anthropology and history; African art and religion are also described. This is an ideal introduction to a fascinating topic. I have read several books in the Great Ages of Man series and this is one of my favorites. Highly recommended.
