John Cunningham Geikie was a Scottish clergyman, born in Edinburgh in 1826. After completing his education at the University of Edinburgh, he travelled with his father to Canada where, in 1862, he became a pastor in Toronto. He returned to England, and eventually took holy orders in the Church of England (1876). He wrote a number of books, primarily dealing with religious or historical topics. The author notes that "It was written after a lengthened stay in Canada, and may be thoroughly relied upon either by intending emigrants, or by others who wish to know about Bush Life in the Dominion." The first edition was published by Routledge (London) in 1864 under the title "George Stanley; or, Life in the Woods". Re-published by different British and American publishers, under various titles. This is a later printing of the 1865 first American edition. See Watters 870.
