A Western front Companion, written by Dr John Laffin is without doubt the most detailed compilation of interesting facts on military service on the Western Front during WW1. Although the author is Australian, and could have easily filled this book with facts and feats of arms by the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), he delivers a comprehensive and unbiased account of all Armies, their equipment, tactics, successes and failures during the conduct of all the varied phases that the War went through during 1914 - 1918. Of note is a most interesting Chapter dedicated to the various Commanders, both Allied and German, that were most prominent during the War. This chapter delivers a frank and unbiased account on who did well and who did not as a Divisional or Army Commander and more importantly delivers to the reader an insight into some of the methods of selection of Senior officers used by the British Army during this time. This book represents another view on a turbulent time in the world's history and any Military researcher or Western Front Battlefield Guide should not leave home without it in their kit bag.
